Beads N Botanicals to Celebrate First Year Anniversary Little Bit of Hippie and New Age Thrives
HOOPESTON, IL (PRWEB) October 23, 2006 -- Just over a year ago, Beads N Botanicals owner, Catherine Novak, was searching to find a storefront to house her business.
“I tried to lease the old Weber’s Pharmacy on Main Street in Hoopeston, but the owner only wanted to sell it,” Novak said.
In a town where it seemed too many store fronts lay empty and unavailable for rent, this news hit her hard. But that disappointment turned around rather quickly for the former New Jersey resident who had relocated to Hoopeston from Virginia Beach.
“A For-Rent sign went up in what is now my storefront at 227 S. Market Street,” she said.
The building once housed the local Migrant Workers Office. Instead of migrant workers seeking aid, the shop now sees a steady stream of local people interested in crafts and alternative health. Some folks describe the shop as “a little bit of hippie meets a little bit of new age.”
The store gained its name, “Beads N Botanicals,” from Novak’s background as a certified medicinal herbalist, perfumer and jewelry maker. For more than a dozen years as the proprietress of Wise Weeds Botanicals, she offered her handmade products at Medieval Faires, Renaissance Faires, music festivals and other events on the East Coast and in the Midwest.
“Beading is an addiction for me,’ says Novak. “I wanted to share that interest and offer local craftspeople a place where they could find supplies and inspiration.”
Besides beading supplies, including Swarovski ™ crystals, seed beads and semi-precious stones, Beads N Botanicals also features medicinal and culinary herbs, handmade jewelry, teas, handmade incense, handblended oils, candles, bath salts, soaps, books, custom-blended perfumes, body washes, shampoos and body lotions.
“We have more than 200 essential oils, fragrance oils and blends in stock,” advises Novak, “so I can custom scent body wash, shampoo or lotion to almost any taste.”
Furthermore, Novak offers a variety of classes on jewelry making, beading, aromatherapy, medicinal herbalism and personal development. Past classes have included Basic Wire Working: Making Earrings, Introduction to Aromatherapy, Meditation for Relaxation, Crystals Used for Healing, and Keeping Healthy with Kitchen Herbs.
“More and more locals are finding Beads N Botanicals to be a great source not only for beading supplies, but also for information on holistic health,” comments Novak. “Being able to help someone deal with chronic pain through meditation and herbs is very satisfying.”
The shop will be hosting its First Year Anniversary Holiday Gifts & Open House on Saturday, November 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mulled cider, special discounts and craft demonstrations will be featured.
In addition to running Wise Weeds Botanicals since 1992, Catherine Novak has served as an adjunct faculty member for Northampton Community College, Bethlehem, Pa., teaching introductory aromatherapy and herbal medicine. She has taught in several N.J. adult school programs. She has been a featured speaker at Barnes & Noble; and spoken about medicinal herbs on the Health Nuts NJ radio show. A graduate of the Herbal Therapeutics, Inc. School of Botanical Medicine, she presents training workshops at day spas, stores and other venues on the healing properties of essential oils and herbs as well as personal development. Her business, Wise Weeds Botanicals, offers handmade oils and incenses to both retail and wholesale customers.
